Our Story
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) represents approximately 750,000 members who work in a wide variety of fields, including construction, utilities, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government. The IBEW has members in both the United States and Canada and is one of the largest unions in the United States. The Local 153, chartered on April 21st, 1914, covers Berrien and Cass counties in Michigan and St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, and Kosciusko counties in Indiana. The Local 153 have set the standard for quality our industry in Michiana with driven, talented professionals for over 100 years – while promoting reasonable methods of work and cultivating strong relationships among our contractors.
The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) is the voice of the $130 billion industry responsible for bringing lighting, power and communications to buildings and communities across the United States. NECA’s Northern Indiana Chapter was chartered on November 30th, 1944, with a purpose of championing the electrical contractors of Northern Indiana, facilitating coordination between members, and strengthening the labor force with talented craftspeople. One of the most distinguishing attributes of NECA is its relationship with the local IBEWs – while most trade associations operate separately of any other entity, NECA embraces its relationship with the Electrical Workers Union because of the benefits in quality of workforce that comes from cooperation.
The Northern Indiana chapter of NECA and IBEW Local 153, through this alliance, have created the South Bend and Vicinity Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) to train Michiana’s next generation of electrical professionals.
Our mission is to train, support, and represent the past, present, and future electrical workers of Michiana – giving our area a superior workforce of craftspeople to light the way to a better future for all.
